When an advisor tells me business is slow, I never ask about the market. I ask them to score four dials, one to five each: lead generation, nurture, conversion, and retention. Ninety seconds of honest scoring diagnoses what months of vague worry can't, because "slow" always lives in a specific dial.
“A goal without the plan is really just a wish.”
The four dials
- Lead generation: are new right-fit people finding you weekly? (Not followers, prospects.)
- Nurture: does your list hear from you on a rhythm, or only when you're launching?
- Conversion and delivery: when someone raises a hand, does a structured path, call, proposal, close, onboarding, carry them to booked?
- Retention and upsell: do past clients hear from you between trips, get first access, and have a next thing to buy?

The rule: fix the lowest dial only
Score them quarterly and resist the urge to fix everything. Work ONLY the lowest number for the next ninety days. A business with a 4 in leads and a 1 in retention doesn't need more marketing, it needs to call its past clients; more leads would just pour water into the same leak. Most travel businesses, scored honestly, are strong on conversion and starving on nurture and retention, the quiet dials where the compounding money lives. Four numbers, once a quarter, lowest dial first. Strategy doesn't have to be complicated to be real.
Common Questions
How do you diagnose a slow travel business?
Score four dials one to five: lead generation, nurture, conversion and delivery, retention and upsell. Slow always lives in a specific dial rather than everywhere.
Which part of the business should you fix first?
Only the lowest-scoring dial, for the next ninety days. More leads poured into a retention leak simply drains faster.
How often should you run this review?
Quarterly. Four numbers, honestly scored, beats a complicated strategy document nobody revisits.
