The Free Day Is a Product

Your guides will happily pack every single day, don't let them. A designed free day mid-trip restores your guests, protects the group's energy, and sells an optional tour at pure margin.

An unhurried morning, the day nobody planned and everybody needed

Ask a local guide to plan your week and you'll get seven packed days, because packed days are what guides sell. It's your job, not theirs, to know better. On my itineraries, a mid-trip free day isn't leftover space. It's a designed product with three jobs.

Day three is a free day and we sell that tour.

The three jobs of the free day

  • Recovery: by day three, even delighted guests are tired. The free day resets the group's energy, and every day after it lands better.
  • Choice: luxury is autonomy. The guest who wants the spa gets the spa; the shopper shops; the sleeper sleeps guiltlessly. One unscheduled day makes the whole trip feel personal.
  • Revenue: day three is free, and we sell that day's optional tour. The guests who fear missing out buy it at healthy margin; the ones who don't got the rest they'd never have requested. Everyone wins, including the P&L.

The discipline is saying no to the guide's seven-day parade and yes to white space on purpose. Announce it proudly in the itinerary, "Day 3: yours", with a curated menu of optional add-ons beside it. Packed itineraries impress on paper. Paced ones get reviewed like magic. Sell the pause.

Common Questions

Should a group itinerary have a free day?

Yes, designed rather than leftover. It restores energy, gives guests autonomy, and can carry a high-margin optional tour for those who want it.

Why do guides over-schedule itineraries?

Because packed days are what guides sell. Deciding the pacing is the advisor's job, not the ground operator's.

How do you present a free day to clients?

Proudly, in the itinerary, with a curated menu of optional add-ons beside it. Paced trips get reviewed like magic; packed ones only impress on paper.
