Switching From ChatGPT? Bring Your AI's Memory With You

The biggest fear about switching AI tools is starting over. You don't have to — here's the ten-minute move that transfers everything ChatGPT knows about you and your business into Claude.

A laptop showing data being reviewed and transferred

Whenever I recommend advisors consolidate their AI work into Claude, I hear the same worry: "But ChatGPT already knows me. I don't want to start over." Fair — months of conversations teach an AI a lot about your business. Here's the part almost nobody knows: you can take that knowledge with you, and it takes about ten minutes.

The memory import, step by step

  • In Claude's settings, find the memory import option. It generates a prompt designed to be pasted into your old AI tool.
  • Paste that prompt into ChatGPT. It will output everything it remembers about you — your business, preferences, and context, in one response.
  • Copy that output back into Claude. Done: your new AI now starts with your history instead of a blank slate.

The bonus step most people miss

ChatGPT keeps a second stash of knowledge in its settings — under Personalization, there's a managed list of saved memories. Open it, copy everything there too, and add it to Claude. Between the two transfers, nothing it learned about you gets left behind.

Why this matters beyond the convenience

Memory is what separates an assistant from a stranger. If you're going to master one AI tool deeply — which I believe beats dabbling in ten — then everything you've already taught any AI belongs in the one you're committing to. Import the memory, turn memory generation on so it keeps learning, and then start building your AI brain on top. The free Travel AI Kit picks up from exactly there.
